A Shiny Happy New Year All04/01/2019

Hello all friends & subscribers, excuse the REM reference, Michale Stipe isn’t keen on Shiny Happy People apparently, but I digress…here’s to a better fairer kinder new year, bring on 2019…

Political madness aside 2018 was the year of ‘Return of the Native’, the Worcestershire themed the album came out in June, picked some great reviews from the Daily Mirror to the Irish Times and across many of the online review sites including Whispering & Hollerin & R&R Magazine; most have been posted to the  reviews section here. The album also attracted radio play from BBC 6 Musics Tom Robinson and from Andrew Marsden on BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester who have included VP in their Hot Tip selection for 2019. I think its one of my strongest records so please do have a listen here on BANDCAMP where you can also buy the album. Its also streaming via Spotify, iTunes and the usual online platforms, physical copies available from the shop here on my site.

I’m continuing to run workshops for TONIC MUSIC FOR MENTAL HEALTH, this year saw the first in a series of workshops held in secure mental health hospitals with more to come in 2019.

Throughout last year I played both solo and duo shows, the duo shows with Rob keys wiz Rob Steadman, culminating in Irish Gigs [Dublin & Belfast] opening for the hyper talented and fabulous human being Peter Wilson aka Duke Special in November in lovely old theatres. There’s nothing quite like a lovely old theatre gig to pep up a performance and in spite of my broken arm we had a wonderful couple of shows. The arm is now healing and the gigs I was forced to cancel have been rescheduled, details are here.

Next year will see the release of a new band album I’ve been recording with musicians Rob Steadman [keys], Ollie Collins[bass] and Che Beresford[drums] from Parlour Flames, its kind of hard and funky in places and theres a political feel to some of it. We’ll be making the usual announcements once we’re closer to release date.  We’re finishing keys percussion and backing vocals in Jan then go to Dave Drapers Palace of Audio Delight in Pershore to finish things. I’m really looking forward to playing once again with the band, its been awhile, and thanks to those of you sending encouraging messages, they’re appreciated.

As ever I look forward to catching up with you at a gig and via the social media platform of choice where you’ll find my gig updates and news postings. Thats about it, love and light and best wishes to you all,

VPx

Belfast Show05/12/2018

Rob Steadman and I head across the channel to Belfast ELMWOOD HALL, part of the University Halls, for a gig on Sat 8th December. I was last there supporting 4 Men and A Dog [I think they were called] back in 2004 when I worked as an Artist in Residence at the Cathedral Arts Festival. Its a beautiful hall as I recall. This will be our second show with Duke Special, last weeks was such a joy to be part of, lovely welcoming band and crew and warm engaging audience. I did the show guitar free due to my broken arm which I’m trying not to bang on about all the time and failing! Every weeks a little better, this week way less pain but still no strength to squeeze the guitar so once again I’ll do a couple on the Ukulele and Rob will cover,  he was amazing in Dublin in spite of the rather stress start we had to the gig [somehow the keys sounds had done a bunk but we got them back in the nick of time]…if any Irish friends are reading this please do feel free to email me re guest list x

Return of the Flames12/11/2018

Meanwhile in Manchester’s Lever Street Studios Ollie Collins [bass] and Che Beresford [drums] have been laying down their parts for a new Parlour Flames album [although we’re not sure we’ll call ourselves that again this time around], we need to weigh up the pros n cons. I’ve written and recorded all the songs here in my own studio but we aim to go posh to finish it off in a more sonically swanky setting come the new year. Details will appear here and on our social media platforms as we go. I hope you can get involved with the journey. The songs have a kind of warped political flavour  – musically we seem to be heading in a Kraut-Rock-Funk direction…but its early days yet, there are no rules, no boundaries, here are a few pics, more to come.
